Heart to Heart Shanghai
The 2013 Chi Fan for Charity Shanghai funds were able to aid five children who received much-needed heart surgeries through Heart to Heart Shanghai. The first of the five Heart to Heart children arrived in Shanghai on May 5th, 2014 to receive their Cardiac Cauterization surgeries. The final three children arrived a month later.
The first child we visited was four years old and resides in the Anhui province. She was diagnosed with CHD during a routine checkup one-month after birth, but unfortunately she was unable to receive the surgery she needed. Her parents had planned a surgery for her in 2012, but unfortunately, her grandfather at that time was diagnosed with esophageal cancer, and therefore the family had to borrow money in order to save him. As a migrant worker in Zhe Jiang, her father is the only family member who earns a small salary. Their one-salary income only allows them to save RMB 2,000 a year, whilst being RMB 80,000 in debt. The second sponsored child was born very sick with purple lips and nails. Three months after birth and was diagnosed with CHD. She frequently had coughs and got fevers, which hindered her from enjoyable childhood activities like running or playing. Her father had to quit his job and start working part time in order to be close to Ma Guo, while her mother stays at home to take care of both Ma Guo and Ma Guo’s grandfather. Unfortunately, the family’s income only covers her medicine, but is not nearly adequate for her surgery. Her CHD condition was a complex and costly one which kept her in ICU for additional weeks. She is now recovered and returned to her home town. The third child had fevers that began in 2012 when she was diagnosed with CHD (VSD). Her parents had her when they were below the legal marital age and due to their lack of a marriage license, she was born without a Hukou and no rural medical insurance. Her mother, who ran away from home, now stays in the house taking care of her and are RMB 26,000 in debt. The other two children had similar stories of hardship and providing their children the much needed heart surgery impacted their families for the rest of their lives.
We are lucky to have been able to contribute to the future of these Chinese children’s lives and look forward to the continued life-saving partnership between Chi Fan for Charity and Heart to Heart Shanghai.
Home Sweet Home
2013 beneficiary, Home Sweet Home, just after they had received the Chi Fan for Charity donation, found out that their current office and workshop would be demolished on December 24th, potentially ending the program! Luckily, Chi Fan for Charity was capable of making a company-saving donation for Home Sweet Home to continue looking for a new center to house their underprivileged staff. After a lengthy search, Home Sweet Home finally found a place where they can continue to help others with their program. Many of the guests participating in the Home Sweet Home program are disabled and in order to accommodate for individual needs, reconstruction and renovations were necessary to make the new location ‘disability-friendly.’
Once renovations are complete, volunteers and staff will help clean, paint and move everything into the new location. Although we are thankful for the support from charitable organizations such a Chi Fan for Charity, there are still several projects on our wish list that we lack the funds to acquire. They want to create a protective cover against the rain and bad weather to reach the bathrooms and eating area, create a space to park and recharge scooters, add a bathroom and shower to create a suitable and comfortable living area upstairs. They would greatly appreciate the Pro-bono help of moving companies to assist with the moving process. Currently, especially with the summer months, they need standing and wall-attached air cons! They hope you and those that you will know will take your time to consider our needs and the importance of this cause and help in any way possible. Home Sweet Home appreciates any and all help.
The Renewal Center
At The Renewal Center, they were excited to receive the funds from Chi Fan for Charity and planned to use them to build an in house Coffee Shop which would help their guests to learn working skills. In preparation they have begun some initial preparatory renovations with things like utility upgrades. They are waiting for their cafe registration to go through before they begin the final phase of the renovations. Regarding this use of money towards renovations, only a fraction of the funding from Chi Fan for Charity has been spent so far. Once renovations are completed, they will then be able to provide a full report. Although renovations have not been completed, it is encouraging for Chi Fan supporters to know that these restorations and developments are well under way. Meanwhile, their training program is continuing to effectively change the lives of two young men starting jobs at Element Fresh last week. We are looking forward to the increased capacity the training cafe will provide. We still have the goal of being a Chi Fan for Charity dining site later this year!
If anyone has resources to connect them with free or discounted construction materials such as tile, windows, doors and concrete, it will save them money on the renovations. Anything along the lines of kitchen equipment including (commercial) refrigerators, espresso machines, or commercial blenders/juicers are also beneficial towards our cause. We would be happy to consider second-hand equipment. Finally, any restaurant furniture, cutlery and dishes we would also love to find resources. And as always, everyone is welcome to learn more about their work, sign up for a visit or learn about opportunities to volunteer at http://renewal.org.cn.
Following on from the success of the 2011, 2012 and 2013 events, we are delighted to announce that this year’s event will be held on Saturday 15th November, 2014. Save the date and stay tuned for more updates! Feel free to contact us with any questions. Together let’s make this year an even bigger showcase for some of the incredible organizations that are active in our great city.
