Austen Morris Associates participated in Community Center Shanghai’s Giving Tree Program. We got the unique opportunity to visit a rural school in Pinghu, Zhejiang, to deliver gifts for the holidays. Many and staff associates from Austen Morris Associates including; Andriy, Angie, Anu, Bessie, Billie, Connie, Darren, Dino, Elaine, Erwin, Greg, Iris, James, Keith, Katie, Kelly, Leo, Mari, Max, Melinda, Rob, Sherry, Ted, Vivian, and Vincent participated by donating bags filled with presents for underprivileged primary school children.
At the Pinghu Yuxin School, we attended a ceremony where the children sang and performed for us, welcoming us to their school. Then, as the children returned to class, we started handing out their gifts. You could see the children’s faces light up with joy as they received the gifts, as they may have otherwise never received such toys and accessories. We were also able to speak with a lot of the children and play with them outside, including basketball with a ball that one of the boys received as a gift!
This is Austen Morris’ second year participating in the Giving Tree event. This year, fifty bags were filled for the kids. All of the funds that Austen Morris Associates donated to the Pinghu Yuxin Elementary School were raised through generous donations from Austen Morris Associates’ staff. Each bag contained a stationary set, a winter jacket, a scarf, a bag of their favorite color, and a toy they wished for. Giving Tree is a program of the Community Center Shanghai. It provides underprivileged children with a bag of new holiday gifts. Giving Tree began as an idea that Joanne Gao Price had for her family during the Christmas season to give gifts to others less fortunate. From this humble beginning, a movement started that is still growing. The main purpose of Giving Tree is simply to ensure that someday all migrant and orphaned children receive a gift bag for the holiday season. Its mission is to grow this initiative until they can help all deserving children throughout China experience what it feels like to receive a gift.
Currently the program reaches approximately 15,000 children annually. Giving Tree works with donors to provide essential items to children in time for the Spring Festival, promoting the message of “Giving,” and showing the children that they are important. We thank all of the Austen Morris Team for their help and donations to make this year’s event as successful as it was, and we are already looking forward to next year’s event!
